GATE 2016 Exam Pattern


The GATE Paper comprises of two types of questions - Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Questions. Multiple Choice Questions will have a correct answer from four options given while Numerical Questions have to be calculated and answered with the help of of a keypad. The GATE 2016 Question Paper will be designed to test students on their comprehension and application skills, recall as well as analytical abilities.

It may be noted that General Aptitude Questions are compulsory for all papers and will carry  questions for 15 marks.

GATE 2016 Exam Pattern as per the Paper code is as follows:
  • Papers with codes AE, AG, BT, CE, CH, CS, EC, EE, IN, ME, MN, MT, PI, TF and XE: Engineering Mathematics (15% of total marks), General Aptitude section (15% of total marks) and  Main subject of the paper (70% percentage of the total marks).
  • Papers with codes AR, CY, EY, GG, MA, PH and XL: General Aptitude section (15% of total marks) and  Main subject of the paper (85% percentage of the total marks).
Note:
GATE 2016  XE Paper will have a compulsory section in Engineering Mathematics and General Aptitude along with any two of XE sections B to G.
GATE 2016 XL Paper Pattern will have a compulsory section inSection H in Chemistry and General Aptitude along with any two of XL sections I to M

Negative Marking: There will be Negative marking in GATE 2016 for the Multiple Choice Questions only. There will be a deduction of 1/3 marks for every wrong answer to a 1-mark multiple-choice question and 2/3 marks for every wrong answer to the 2 mark questions. There will be no negative marking for numerical questions.

GATE 2016 Application Procedure: Through the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS)

Candidates have to register first by providing a valid Email ID and a mobile number along with a password. Candidates will have to log in after registering. They must enter their personal details, qualification details and upload their photograph, signature and other specified documents.Candidates must then pay the Application Fees and print the Application after submitting the Application Form.

GATE 2016 Application Fee:
  • General/OBC-NCL Male Candidates/Other Candidates: Rs 1500
  • SC / ST / PwD/ Women Candidates: Rs 750
Note: Additional bank charges apply as per norm

GATE 2016 Application Fee Payment: Online OR Echallan     

GATE 2016 Result: To be declared on March 19, 2016 at 5 pm

Candidates must log in to check their Result. They can know their scores and the qualifying marks for the respective papers. The GATE 2016 Score Card will be available for download from March 27, 2016 onwards till May 29, 2016.

GATE Cutoff: Candidates can check the Previous year cutoff marks to know the scores required to qualify in GATE 2016 and for admisisons to the M.Tech courses

GATE 2016 Counseling Process and Website:

Candidates will have to apply to the individual institutes/universities as per the admission notification of each institute/university. There is no common counselling for the IITs while admissions to the NITs are through the CCMT process.
